I welcomed motherhood just a month shy of my 22nd birthday. This isn’t a statement of regret; rather, it’s a reflection on the role I’ve embraced for nearly a decade. While being a mom is a significant part of my identity, it doesn’t define the entirety of who I am.
Sometimes, it feels like my life before July 2012 is a distant memory. Fast forward to today, and I’m surrounded by a seven-year-old, a nine-year-old, a playful pup, and a loving husband—all of whom I cherish deeply. Yet, there are moments when they overlook the fact that I am more than just a caregiver and spouse.
Having worked from home for nearly three years, it should have been a dream come true. However, being constantly available often reinforces my family’s belief that my primary purpose is to cater to their needs.
“Mom, I made a list for lunch tomorrow.”
“Sweetheart, can you pick this up at the store?”
“Mom, Z is staring at me again!”
But I am not just a taxi or a referee. I often find myself trying to carve out time to write this very article, only to be sidetracked by what seems like an urgent task that demands my attention. I’m ready to break free from that cycle.
I adore my family, but I also have personal dreams and ambitions. I’m transitioning into a full-time creative career, juggling three unfinished novels, and gearing up to launch my own business. Just because my projects may not resonate with my family as much as their favorite video games, doesn’t mean they are any less important.
When I discuss books with my daughters, they’re often surprised by my knowledge of classics like The Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew. I recently helped my fourth grader outline her essay, and she excitedly told her classmates that her mom is writing a novel about Catherine de’ Medici. I appreciated her enthusiasm but couldn’t help feeling a bit annoyed when she asked why it was taking me so long to finish it. Seriously?
While I wouldn’t trade my family for anything, sometimes they need to understand that life extends beyond their immediate requests. This realization often leads me to retreat into my office, where I can dedicate time to what brings me joy.
To all the moms out there striving to strike a balance, remember this: choosing yourself is not selfish. When you embrace your entire purpose, you might inspire those around you in ways you never imagined. And when that inspiration comes from those closest to you, it creates a special kind of magic.
I cherish my role as a mom, but I also value the individual I am. It’s time for my family to truly meet the complete me, as there’s so much more on the horizon. This is just the beginning.
