In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, a stunning photoshoot unfolded featuring eight radiant mothers-to-be. Photographer Mia Thompson decided to capture the beauty of life during a challenging time, as the hurricane left many families stranded and homes in disarray.
Thompson shared her striking images on social media, recounting how in October 2016, Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the region, resulting in mandatory evacuations. “Many took shelter in their homes while facing the storm’s wrath, and these incredible women were among them,” she explained.

With the lights dimmed and the wind howling outside, what’s a couple to do? Organizing the garage? No, it’s time to connect in a more intimate way. But in the midst of the chaos, these moms found themselves in a unique situation.
Mia reached out to find expectant mothers who had weathered the storm. “I received an overwhelming response! Coordinating two photoshoots and aligning schedules was the real challenge,” she told Home Insemination Kit. It’s likely her initial post was something along the lines of, “Hey, did the storm bring you a little surprise?”
As the area began to recover, Mia noted, “Though much was lost, eight beautiful new lives were on the way. I organized two special photoshoots to celebrate these amazing moms-to-be, each carrying a miracle conceived during Hurricane Matthew.”

For those unfamiliar, Hurricane Matthew was a fierce storm that became the first Category Five hurricane in the Atlantic since 2007, prompting extensive evacuations and leaving over half a million South Carolinians without power.
“A few of the moms knew each other beforehand, but most were strangers. It was wonderful to witness them bond during the shoots,” Mia shared. She created a group for these women to connect further and provide support as they journey through motherhood together. With all but one of them expecting girls, this photoshoot may be the beginning of lasting friendships for both the moms and their daughters.
As for future plans, Mia revealed, “I would absolutely love to organize a follow-up shoot once all the hurricane babies arrive!”
Let’s make that happen!
