Hey Everyone, Let’s Stop Labeling Women as ‘Crazy’

I’ll be real — I’ve been labeled a “crazy woman” more times than I can count. Unfortunately, I suspect that most women have faced this at some point in their lives. While I’ll admit that I can be a bit much, I refuse to accept being called crazy simply for expressing my emotions, whether that’s anger, frustration, or sadness—feelings that a certain segment of society seems to find unacceptable.

Let’s put an end to the term “crazy” when it comes to women. It’s neither charming nor humorous, and more importantly, it’s just plain wrong.

Confidence vs. Craziness

What some may interpret as craziness is often a woman demonstrating confidence. There are countless times when women are expected to remain silent—be it during a sports event or a political discussion. If a woman voices a well-informed opinion that contradicts the prevailing view, she may be dismissed as “crazy.” But in reality, it takes immense courage for a woman to speak up in environments where she might be interrupted or overlooked. If you think she’s crazy, maybe it’s just that her confidence is too much for you to handle.

Passion Misunderstood

What you might label as crazy can also be a woman’s passion. Think of the woman who actively participates in rallies, makes calls to her elected officials, and passionately advocates for marginalized communities. She’s the one who speaks up at PTA meetings and stands her ground at social gatherings when someone’s insensitive remarks just can’t fly. Some might call her crazy for her relentless pursuit of justice and equality, but she is anything but. She’s a fighter, inspiring others as she strives for a better future.

Being Vocal is Not Crazy

Another aspect of what gets labeled as crazy is simply a woman being vocal. Yes, it’s true that women sometimes have the loudest voices in the room, and that can ruffle some feathers. When a woman is assertive and refuses to tone it down to fit someone else’s definition of “polite,” she may be deemed crazy. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in—women often have to raise their voices to ensure they’re heard, and that shouldn’t be the case.

It’s disheartening to know that our thoughts, feelings, and opinions can be easily invalidated with a mere phrase like “crazy woman.” If our statements challenge the status quo, we’re often told we’re overly emotional, and our words are brushed aside as hormonal outbursts. This needs to change.

Making Our Voices Heard

We are determined to make our voices heard. If that means elevating our voices so you can finally listen, then so be it.

And I can’t believe I have to reiterate this, but here it goes: It’s 2023, and if your only response to a woman’s assertiveness is to call her crazy because of her menstrual cycle, you need to stop talking. Such remarks are immature and classless. A woman’s period is not your business, so keep it to yourself unless you’re a medical professional, like an OB-GYN.

You can call women confident, strong, passionate, and brave. You can label us loud or relentless if you must, but let’s retire the “crazy” label whenever we intimidate you with our brilliance.
