Hannah candidly shared her experiences with Zane Lowe regarding the obstacles and judgments she faced during her pregnancy. At just 26, the artist had a whirlwind summer, welcoming her first child, Alex, in July and releasing her fourth album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, in August. While there’s much to celebrate, Hannah expressed that it’s been tough to feel fully at ease due to outside opinions suggesting she was mishandling her journey into motherhood.

“I’m 26, I worked hard for this pregnancy, and I feel financially secure and established in my career. It seemed like the perfect time,” she shared on the Apple show. “Yet, I often felt treated like a teenager. It brought up feelings of shame from my past. Who are they to judge my choices?”

Moreover, Hannah felt pressure about continuing to work throughout her pregnancy, especially given her history of pregnancy loss. “I knew people would say things like, ‘For someone like Hannah, who’s had miscarriages, she shouldn’t be working so hard. Would it have killed her to take a break for the baby?’ I anticipated it,” she noted.

If she took a break, criticism would follow. “Then there’s the narrative of ‘She worked too much, she’s going to end up alone, and her career won’t comfort her at night,’” she added. No matter the decision made by working mothers, public scrutiny can be overwhelming.

In light of this, Hannah decided to step back from social media for the sake of her mental health and her baby’s well-being. “The stakes are too high. I realized that my stress from social media could impact another person’s nervous system. So, I had to prioritize what was best for us,” she explained.

Perhaps it’s time we all support new mothers like Hannah in making the right choices for themselves and their little ones, whether in terms of work, breastfeeding, or any parenting decisions, as long as both mother and child are thriving and content.
