Summer is the season of creativity! Drive-in theaters may have faded into nostalgia, but one grandmother from Ohio decided to revive that delightful experience for her grandkids.
Lila Johnson, a proud grandmother of six, found herself with the challenge of keeping her grandchildren entertained throughout the summer. With some clever thinking and a sprinkle of inspiration from the internet, she crafted a unique solution to keep the kids engaged for at least one memorable night.
“My aunt created a ‘drive-in’ for all the children in our family, and it’s exactly how I aspire to be when I grow older,” tweeted Kelly Andrews, Lila’s niece. The enthusiasm surrounding her post garnered nearly 200,000 likes, proving she’s not the only one charmed by the idea.
According to ABC News, Lila’s inspiration struck while browsing Amazon one evening. “I stumbled upon some movie projectors and thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to host an outdoor movie night?’” she shared. To make the experience feel authentic, she crafted little cars out of boxes for each child. Her son, a graphic designer, helped by creating personalized license plates adorned with their names. Lila’s creative juices flowed, and soon, she had planned an event that felt just like a real drive-in. “We invited anyone who could join us, and we ended up with 12 kids!”
The event was a delightful success, complete with snacks and all the little details that contributed to a truly memorable evening. “We have six grandkids and wanted to find fun activities to enjoy while they’re off school,” Lila explained. Mission accomplished!
But Lila’s endeavor went beyond simple summer entertainment. Her sister-in-law, Betty Davis, highlighted the deeper significance of the project. “It’s really special because our mother passed away last year, and her greatest fear was that we would all drift apart. We make it a point to come together each month, and this is something that the kids will remember,” Betty told ABC News. “Not many people create lasting memories like this; we want to ensure we stay connected because life’s too short.”
I can’t help but wonder what film they screened that evening; it certainly felt like I had just watched the first ten minutes of UP!
