Gabrielle Union recently shared insights about her role as a working mother during her appearance on Gwyneth Paltrow’s The goop Podcast. She revealed that her stepchildren, Zane, 13, and Jett, 19—Dwyane Wade’s kids from a previous relationship—were confused about why she chose to pursue a career when their father’s NBA earnings were more than enough to support the family. According to Union, they expressed that she “shouldn’t” need to work, believing she could just stay home since “Dad is wealthy.”
“They had reached a phase where they wanted our family to mirror others,” Union explained. “They discovered how much their dad earned and thought I should be at home like other moms since ‘Dad is rich and we should just be a regular family.’”
Union noted that the kids felt a sense of “relief” when she and Wade tied the knot in 2014, but they still wished for her to be a full-time stay-at-home mom. She highlighted the challenges faced by women in the workforce, especially when confronted with questions about their career choices.
“They just wanted to fit in with the idea of a normal family,” she said. “After our wedding, they seemed relieved, which isn’t a typical response you’d expect from kids in this situation. But then they were like, ‘Wait, you’re leaving? Dad’s still rich, so what’s going on here?’”
Union took the opportunity to discuss her passion for her work with her children, assuring them that her career pursuits wouldn’t diminish her love for them or her role as their stepmother. “Sometimes women want to work and have a career, and that’s part of who I am. It doesn’t mean I care for you any less. I’ll do my best to be available while also making space for both parents,” she reassured her children.
With her social media brimming with heartwarming moments from the Union-Wade family life, it’s clear that she values her role as a stepmom to Xavier, 7, and her daughter Kaavia, 2, whom she and Wade welcomed via surrogate in November 2018.
