With the arrival of summer, the dreariness of winter has finally faded away. The trees are lush, and it’s time to slip into flip-flops, even if our toenails might need some attention. Kids are growing restless in their classrooms, and let’s be real—we’ve long abandoned the idea of checking homework or ensuring lunches are nutritious.
The ultimate goal? Summer vacation!
Ah yes, that blissful season when kids are around non-stop and the fridge seems perpetually empty of popsicles. The days stretch longer, cocktails become fruitier, and the battles over sunscreen application begin. Summer brings a flood of expectations, where the pressure to organize fun activities for the kids can feel relentless. We’re inundated with online checklists, whether it’s crafting the ideal mojito or uncovering the 101 must-visit spots for families this June. Meanwhile, stores tempt us with promises of unforgettable memories if we invest in extravagant backyard toys. Mothers compete over the number of enrichment camps their kids attend, and our social media feeds are filled with friends flaunting vacations that seem like a distant dream.
From summer reading lists to endless BBQs and family gatherings, the once-appealing concept of summer can quickly turn into an exhausting marathon—especially for moms.
I’m here to reclaim my summer. I want genuine relaxation, true enjoyment, and a more laid-back approach during the days when I can skip the morning rush and lunch-packing. It’s vital that I savor those mojitos and allow evenings by the fire pit to linger. So how do I plan to achieve this?
Here are my resolutions for a more enjoyable summer:
- I won’t restrict screen time—for myself.
While many advocate for unplugging, I understand the necessity of technology in my life. I run an online business and managing emails is part of my daily routine. Thanks to modern devices, I can work from the pool, beach, or park. So, feel free to judge me when you see me checking my emails while my kids play; just know that I’m supporting their snack habits, too. And yes, I’m scrolling through social media too. Deal with it. - I won’t skip my workout regimen.
During the school year, I’m committed to fitness. Morning runs and spin classes keep me energized and social. Why stop just because it’s summer? This season, my kids will be poolside as I swim laps or biking alongside me as I jog off last night’s indulgence. It’s essential they see me prioritize health—even if it means a few extra minutes of waiting before heading to the park. Sorry, kids, my well-being comes first this summer! - I won’t schedule every minute.
In past summers, I meticulously planned every activity down to the last detail, making it feel like a job rather than leisure. This year, I’m opting for spontaneous afternoons spent lounging with a good book. I’m allowing my kids to experience boredom and tap into their creativity. That’s the real art of summer, in my opinion. - I won’t blow my budget on summer camps.
Every March, I scramble to find the perfect summer camps, only to be met with early mornings and complicated carpools. What my kids truly remember are the simple moments, like skipping stones at a local creek, rather than the costly camps I stressed over. This summer will focus on those cherished, low-cost activities instead. If they miss out on Space Camp, so be it; they’ll survive.
While some may view my list as self-centered, for me, it’s about preservation. My children deserve a mother who is relaxed during this cherished season when we can forget about school projects and meetings. And if anyone has a problem with me prioritizing my well-being to be a better parent, they can sip their judgment elsewhere—preferably not on my patio with a margarita in hand.

Summary
This summer, I’m prioritizing relaxation and fun by avoiding excessive planning, limiting budget strains, and ensuring personal health. My focus is on spontaneous enjoyment and creating lasting memories without the pressure of perfection.
