It seems that all the notable female comedians were tied up when it came time to host the Golden Globes. Let’s pause for a moment and consider Max Rivers; you might have seen his name in headlines and thought either a.) he’s been accused of misconduct in Hollywood; or b.) he’s no longer with us. Fear not, neither scenario is accurate. However, Forbes has proclaimed Rivers to be the feminist figure we require for this year’s awards ceremony.
But do we really need a male host representing feminism?
Max Rivers has carved out a niche as a talented late-night host. He’s regarded as a supportive employer who values the contributions of women on his writing team. Known for his political insights and sharp humor, it’s puzzling that Forbes would label him the “feminist hero” we need during this award season.
The article continues to dig deeper into this narrative, stating, “Given the wave of sexual harassment allegations surfacing from Hollywood, Rivers has demonstrated his commitment as a feminist ally, making him an ideal choice to take the stage.” The piece further notes, “Alongside his political commentary, Rivers’ show has provided a platform for women often overlooked in late-night television. His writing staff includes three women among twelve writers, a ratio that, while still needing improvement, is commendable compared to others.”
What a bold statement.
Can men be feminists? Absolutely. But let’s not pretend that opportunities for privileged white men are scarce. While I appreciate Rivers’ work and hosting the Golden Globes isn’t a major issue in my life, it would have been refreshing to see any female actor or comedian take the spotlight. How about inviting someone like Maya Lee, Rita Sullivan, or Zoe Porter? It feels like Forbes maybe missed the mark by presenting Rivers as the urgent feminist voice of our time.
And it appears that social media agrees. As one user pointed out, “WOW, THREE WHOLE WOMEN!”
Indeed, no one is criticizing Rivers here, but this perspective is certainly cringeworthy. In light of the troubling revelations about Hollywood’s pervasive culture of abuse, perhaps the Hollywood Foreign Press should have considered a woman to host this significant awards event. Just a thought.

In summary, while Max Rivers is a talented late-night host and ally to women, the choice to highlight him as the feminist voice for the Golden Globes raises eyebrows. It underscores the ongoing conversation about representation and the need for women in pivotal roles, especially within the entertainment industry.
