In a unique move to promote vaccinations, a concert venue in Florida is offering tickets for just $18 to those who can provide proof of vaccination, while unvaccinated individuals face a steep price of $1,000. This initiative comes as many states roll out vaccine lotteries and incentives to encourage vaccination, with some businesses even granting perks for those who are vaccinated.
After a law prohibiting “vaccine passports” was signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, concert promoter Mark Rivers sought a creative solution to motivate people in the community to get vaccinated. Speaking to ABC News, Rivers expressed his desire to organize a concert that would be accessible for everyone following the long hiatus due to the pandemic. “I wanted to help get those who are hesitant to get vaccinated off the fence,” he explained on social media while sharing the pricing details for the event.
Scheduled for June 26 at VFW Post 39 in St. Petersburg, Florida, the concert will feature three punk rock bands: The Misfits, Anti-Flag, and The Bouncing Souls. Rivers has made available 250 reduced-price tickets for vaccinated attendees, while only four tickets are available at the higher price. So far, no one has purchased the $1,000 tickets.
The local music community has largely reacted positively to the initiative, although Rivers has faced some backlash from anti-vaccine advocates. “Apparently, caring about people’s safety is seen as bad,” he remarked. However, many supporters have praised the idea as a clever way to incentivize vaccinations for a safer event. “Offering a discount for those who are fully vaccinated is a genius move!” one Twitter user commented.
Rivers clarified that entry is not being denied to unvaccinated concertgoers, stating, “You can buy a full-price ticket.”
