Five Insights I Wish I Had During My High School Years

Recently, I reached a significant milestone: it has been twenty years since I graduated high school. I still vividly remember standing on the football field with my fellow graduates, tossing our caps into the air as we celebrated our achievements and the bittersweet moments of our four years together. Reflecting on that time, I can’t help but think about the advice I would give my younger self. Here are five lessons I wish I had known back then:

  1. Travel Early, While Your Expectations Are Modest
One of my biggest regrets is not traveling abroad right after high school. Instead of spending my summers working mundane jobs, I should have taken the opportunity to explore the world on a budget. Youth hostels are meant for young adventurers, not for those with refined tastes. Traveling during your youth allows you to embrace the experience without the baggage of adult expectations. So, if you can, pack up your less-than-reliable car and hit the road—embrace the spontaneity and affordability while you can.
  2. You’ll Connect with Everyone Again…on Social Media
High school social dynamics can be tricky. While I had my close-knit group of friends, I often felt like I was on the outskirts of the social scene. Fast-forward a decade or so, and the pressures of high school seem trivial. You’ll find yourself reconnecting with those once “cool kids” on platforms like Facebook, cheering them on in their new life endeavors. By the time you hit that twenty-year mark, you’ll be inviting anyone from your graduating class over for a casual gathering—just as long as they bring some good wine!
  3. Your First Love Prepares You for Your True Love
Most of us experience that unforgettable first love in high school—the one that feels all-consuming and significant. For me, that relationship taught me valuable lessons about love and heartbreak. While my first love and I eventually parted ways, it helped me recognize what I truly needed in a partner. Years later, we can laugh about our youthful romance while appreciating the deeper connections we’ve found since then. First love is sweet, but lasting love is even better.
  4. Fashion Evolves—Thank Goodness
As a proud graduate of the ‘Aqua Net’ generation, I wore some questionable fashion choices. From oversized sweaters to parachute pants, we made some major style missteps. Looking back, I realize that my high school wardrobe was a mix of trends that would make anyone cringe today. If only I could tell my younger self that someday, I would never wear stirrup pants again! It’s a relief to know that fashion tastes do change for the better over time.
  5. High School Isn’t the Pinnacle of Life
Movies and shows often portray high school as the peak of fun and excitement. However, that notion couldn’t be further from the truth. College brings a new level of freedom and adventure, and adulthood offers even more opportunities to chase your dreams. Life only gets richer as you transition into new phases, from starting your career to building a family. High school memories are precious, but they’re just the beginning of an even more fulfilling journey.

As I reminisce about those high school days, I recognize the growth and experiences that have shaped my life since then. While I could have attended my reunion for a trip down memory lane, I chose instead to reflect from afar, enjoying the moments shared online. After all, the past is merely a chapter in a much larger story.
