Farewell to My Summer Babysitter: A Reflection on Life Lessons

Last week, I had to say farewell to my summer babysitter, and it was an emotional moment. As we parted ways, I couldn’t help but hint that the life lessons she gained while with us far surpassed anything she might learn in four years at a university. She chuckled, but I was completely sincere. Isn’t higher education overrated? To persuade her to reconsider, I’ve compiled a list of essential skills often touted as college prerequisites. Given that she’s already excelled in these areas, it’s hard to justify attending. Makes sense, right?

Essential Skills Learned Outside the Classroom

Coexisting with Others: After spending an entire summer with my kids, sharing a living space with anyone else would feel like a breeze.

Health Management: She has been fantastic at keeping our household free from lice, colds, and the flu. The principle is similar when it comes to personal health: avoid dirty encounters to keep your wellbeing intact.

Culinary Skills: She’s mastered the delicate art of assembling the ultimate peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Throw in macaroni and cheese, cereal, and frozen yogurt, and you’ve got a solid dorm room menu.

Negotiation and Mediation: Acting as a referee between my four and six-year-olds, she’s organized playdates and scheduled naps like a pro. Check, check, and check.

The Power of Napping: Those precious two hours each afternoon with the boys asleep were a lifesaver. Napping is crucial for both sanity and academic success.

Aren’t these the most valuable lessons that college has to offer? I can’t say I was the best student, but I think my argument holds water. Just as long as my child doesn’t become convinced of this theory!
