Approximately five weeks prior to the shooting, the FBI hotline received a tip indicating that Cruz was purchasing firearms and had intentions of “going into a school and shooting it up.” The caller expressed concerns about Cruz, stating, “I know he’s going to explode.” Unfortunately, this critical information was never forwarded to the appropriate FBI office in South Florida, and Cruz was left unchecked. Last October, Cruz pleaded guilty to 17 counts of first-degree murder, with his sentencing trial scheduled for April, where he could face either a death sentence or life in prison. The Department of Justice clarified that the settlement does not imply any admission of liability by the United States.
