As we navigate the aftermath of a surprising election, many of us find ourselves in need of a little holiday cheer. Who would have thought that the source of our uplift would come from a delightful array of charming animals joyfully bouncing on a trampoline?

British retailer John Lewis has established a beloved tradition of unveiling a heartwarming and memorable commercial each Christmas season. This year’s offering is a perfect blend of humor and sentimentality, and it’s truly something you have to see to appreciate fully.

Did you find yourself alternating between laughter and misty eyes? I certainly did. The ad begins with a boxer dog observing his young owner as she joyfully jumps on her bed, setting the scene on Christmas Eve. Once the girl is tucked in for the night, her father sets out to assemble a trampoline in the backyard. After completing the setup, he and his wife settle in to watch television, and what follows is nothing short of adorable.

From the shadows emerge woodland creatures, cautiously approaching the new trampoline. Set to Randy Crawford’s touching tune, “One Day I’ll Fly Away,” the foxes are the first to leap onto the trampoline. As they discover the joy of bouncing, they are soon joined by a badger, a squirrel, and a hedgehog (seriously, I need a hedgehog for Christmas!).

However, not everyone is pleased. Buster the boxer watches forlornly from inside as the other animals enjoy their newfound fun. Then, morning arrives. The little girl races down the stairs, and as her father opens the door, she spots her big gift waiting in the yard. Just as she dashes toward it, Buster bursts past her, claiming the trampoline first. The look of surprise on the girl’s face as her excitement turns to astonishment is priceless, especially as Buster starts bouncing with pure joy.

This commercial was produced in collaboration with The Wildlife Trust, an animal charity that will receive 10% of the sales from plush versions of the critters featured in the ad. While the charitable aspect is commendable, the true joy this ad brings during such uncertain times cannot be overstated. Even as many of us grapple with the recent election outcome and ponder what lies ahead, we can still find moments to laugh and share joy. John Lewis likely didn’t anticipate how much their ad would resonate beyond the UK, and we are grateful for it.
