Embracing the Positive Changes from the Pandemic

This morning, my son settled down at the piano wearing his favorite pajamas, bare feet, and a baseball cap, pouring his heart into his music. It’s become a daily ritual for him, and it’s clear that he truly enjoys it.

Just a year ago, he was begging to quit. Getting him to practice was a constant struggle. Our lives were over-packed with activities, leaving us frantic as we tried to keep up with the demands of school, work, and life for our family of six. At home, he yearned for downtime. The piano was just another obligation in our hectic schedule. We were always on the go, often running on empty.

But that frantic pace has slowed down significantly in the past year. Now, my little boy hops onto the piano bench in his PJs and plays each morning before breakfast. He finds time to play between remote school sessions and assignments, and if he walks by the piano, he stops to play. He’s playing more than ever, and without the pressure of our old over-scheduled life, he is playing for joy!

As I listen to him today, I can hear the progress he’s made this year. His fingers dance across the keys, his feet expertly working the pedal, and he leans in, fully engaged with the music.

A question keeps echoing in my mind: Where do we go from here?

While I long for a return to normalcy, I also don’t want to revert to our previous lifestyle. I hope for an end to the pandemic, for healing and togetherness, but as I hear the beautiful notes from the piano, I reflect on our former race against time.

With vaccinations underway and the world gradually moving toward a semblance of normalcy, this feels like a pivotal moment. Perhaps we have the opportunity to choose how we re-engage with life. What lessons have we learned during this time? What aspects will we cherish? What parts will we leave behind? How can we avoid slipping back into the frantic pace once everything opens back up? Can we be more mindful? What are we truly pursuing?

The music from the piano is telling a story this morning, raising questions about what comes next. Where do we go from here? And what were we rushing toward before?
