With Easter just a week away, it’s time to think about those festive baskets! Now, before you come at me with the classic favorites—yes, I do include chocolate bunnies, Cadbury eggs, and those delicious Reester eggs! I let my kids indulge for a day (or a whole week, if they can manage it). Rather than doling out treats after every meal, I prefer to let them dive into their goodies and enjoy the moment.
However, I understand that candy may not be suitable for every family, especially considering allergies and dietary restrictions. That’s why I like to include a few engaging items to keep the kids entertained during the car ride to Grandma’s house and to help ease the inevitable sugar crash before dinner.
In addition to our usual bubbles and sidewalk chalk (a tradition in our home), here are a few more ideas that will provide fun beyond the holiday weekend:
- Mini Playmobil Sets: Great for solo play or to enhance their current collection.
- Card Games: Perfect for keeping kids busy while adults share amusing family stories over drinks.
- Craft Kits: A hit at the kids’ table during holiday gatherings.
- Family Movies: These are always a winner, especially when tucked into a cute basket alongside some sweet treats.
I know some might think this is a bit much, but I enjoy including items that extend beyond the holiday. These are things I would have likely bought anyway, like their favorite film or a craft kit. It just adds a special touch when they’re nestled in a festive basket with some chocolate surprises.

In summary, Easter baskets can be more than just candy; they can be filled with thoughtful items that kids will enjoy long after the holiday is over.
