This year, my holiday letter takes a unique twist. As I sit down to write, my little one, Clara, is engrossed in the latest installment of her favorite fantasy series, while Alex is practicing his piano scales for what feels like the hundredth time. Meanwhile, Jake is diligently constructing a cardboard model of a zero-emission vehicle. Just kidding!
As we move into the holiday season, I wanted to reach out and let you know that we are all still here, which, in 2020 terms, means we’re “thriving.” I hope the same goes for you! Remember that one parent who shared how their kids were “thriving” during remote learning? Yeah, I remember too. I had that post printed in color and now it serves as my target practice in the backyard—my new form of meditation. With my agent contract gone, I’ve taken on the role of full-time remote learning supervisor for my kids.
Initially, I thought, “This is terrible; they’re missing out on all the experiences I had in school.” But then I realized—imagine not having to spend your entire life healing from the scars of early education! So, here we are.
Is it the same experience as before? Not quite. I’ve come to appreciate Zoom PTA meetings where I can mute my camera and give my fellow moms the side-eye they sometimes deserve. Apologies for my quiet Instagram lately; my kids have taken a creative turn towards drawing battle scenes and excavating the yard as if they’re on a mission to escape. My youngest has taken on the role of the Bird Man!
On a brighter note, Mark got promoted to supervisor this year, leading a team of seven, which he enjoys. He says he has a fantastic crew, and that makes all the difference. Meanwhile, I was once writing grants for various non-profits, but with so many closing down, those days are behind me. Tonight, I might just toss my unused theater tickets into the fireplace for warmth.
And just a heads-up: if you send me a holiday letter boasting about your trip to a tropical paradise or your participation in a social movement that I felt too overwhelmed to take part in, or a family photo that seems too polished, I might just show up at your house, do something scandalous to your partner, and set your meticulously organized garage ablaze. Please send alcohol and some good vibes my way!
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season filled with love and laughter—just kidding! If you’re reading this, my new address is 123 Let’s Get Real Lane, Over It, NM 45673. Come visit!
Take care,
Mia
