As the school year begins, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude and a sincere apology. Thank you for everything you do. After navigating 95 long days at home with my lively children, I’m reminded of how invaluable your role is in their lives. Your dedication and patience deserve all the recognition, rewards, and perhaps even a little wine for managing these energetic kiddos all day long.
My Apologies
Now, onto my apologies. Back in May, I had grand visions for a summer filled with educational activities that would expand my children’s minds. We were going to host a family book club, delve into math practice, conduct kitchen science experiments, learn Spanish, and even play the piano! I thought, “What summer slide?” My kids would return to school in September far ahead of where they left off in May.
Well, that didn’t exactly pan out. I apologize for letting our summer turn into a “summer slip and slide.” Our plans for reading and learning quickly took a backseat to the allure of hot days and swimming pools. Those activity sheets remained untouched, and I’m sorry for not maintaining a writing journal or practicing math facts. Some days, I barely had the energy to keep the peace among my little ones, let alone focus on educational activities.
I’m also sorry for our complete lack of a schedule. We indulged in popsicles in the living room and watched TV during dinner. Bedtimes turned into a vague concept, and our daily routines became a blur of swimming and fun. We even treated cookies and cupcakes as breakfast on some days, and I regret not fostering healthier habits during those months.
Memories Created
Despite all this, I’m not entirely remorseful for the memories we created. We spent our days climbing trees, taking road trips, and embracing the joy of childhood. We were silly and carefree, embodying the essence of being kids.
You understand this, I know. Children need time to be children, and perhaps my apologies reflect more on my own feelings of inadequacy than on my children’s summer adventures. As I drop off my energetic child, transformed from a sweet angel to what seems like a wild creature, I want to offer you my sincerest thanks and a heartfelt apology.
Looking Ahead
I apologize in advance for the first few weeks, which may feel chaotic as my child and others adjust back to the structured environment of school. The remnants of our relaxed summer—sugar highs and late nights—will undoubtedly challenge your efforts to engage them in learning.
While you navigate your own transition back to the school year, you’ll be faced with the task of guiding these exuberant children into a new routine. I empathize with those early days when you might feel overwhelmed and yearn for a break, yet you will greet them with warmth and enthusiasm, asking them about their summer adventures, fully aware that the responses won’t be about practicing math facts.
Thank you for your unwavering dedication. You truly are a superhero in every sense. Here’s to the year ahead—only 276 days until summer returns!
