Dear America, It’s Time to Face the Harsh Reality

As I sit at my desk after school, the news is flooded with yet another school shooting. As an educator, I can’t help but wonder if my students, my school, or my colleagues could be the next victims. This has gone on long enough.

Let’s stop the misguided mantras that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” and “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” These phrases are not only cliché, but they also contribute to the disturbing cycle of gun violence in our nation. The statistics are clear: countries with stricter gun control measures experience significantly lower rates of gun-related deaths. Any attempts to manipulate this data are absurd. We need to wake up and consider a future without guns.

We don’t need more weapons; we need to rid our society of them altogether. I challenge those who cling to the notion of protecting the right to bear arms to reconsider—this belief is rooted in ignorance and fear. How can the right to own a firearm outweigh a child’s right to live?

I am filled with fear. I dread the moment I might have to lock my students in my classroom and hide in a corner, terrified of what could happen outside. I fear that I will have to choose between my life and the safety of my students. I worry about my daughter’s safety when she enters a school that should be a sanctuary, fearing that someone might violate that safety and cause harm.

It terrifies me that some prioritize their misguided “right” to own a gun over the lives of children who fall victim to gun violence daily. It’s alarming that our society has become so self-centered that we would sacrifice our children’s safety for the ability to wield weapons designed solely to inflict harm.

I am scared. And enough is enough. Not one more life should be lost because of guns.

In Summary

We must confront the uncomfortable truth about gun violence in America. The endless cycle of tragedy cannot continue; we must prioritize lives over the right to bear arms.
