Jamie Collins, known for their role on the Lifetime reality series Dance Moms, has shared exciting news about their transition in a delightful TikTok post. After five years in the spotlight, Collins declared that they are transitioning and now use the pronouns they/them and she/her.
“I’m transitioning!” Collins exclaimed. “For those who may not know, this means I’m transgender. My pronouns are they/she, so feel free to use either. I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be posting more on TikTok and can’t wait for what’s ahead!”
Having come out as non-binary during their sophomore year at college, Collins recently graduated from USC. They previously mentioned to The Daily Trojan that the dance industry posed challenges for self-expression, noting, “Growing up, I faced strict expectations from teachers regarding how I should dance as a male performer. It was tough hearing comments like, ‘You need to dance more like a man.’ It really affected me, especially on a national platform.”
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Collins revealed that it was only after moving to Los Angeles for college that they felt free enough to embrace their true gender identity. “In my earlier environment, discussions around gender identity weren’t prevalent, and I didn’t have the resources I needed,” they shared. “I suppressed those feelings because I was uncomfortable with the uncertainty.”
After announcing their transition on May 31, 2021, Collins’ TikTok gained significant attention, becoming the second trending story on E! News, right after an article about a popular actor. Laughing, Collins remarked in a follow-up video, “I was literally cleaning a toilet when I first saw the article!” They expressed their surprise and gratitude for the warm reception, stating, “I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported me in being my authentic self. It’s essential to recognize those in the LGBTQIA+ community who don’t receive such love. There’s still much work to be done, and I’m eager to contribute.”
