Country music icon Dahlia Parker is officially on her way to full vaccination! The 75-year-old superstar recently shared the exciting news that she received her second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which she notably contributed towards funding. While we can’t call her “fully vaccinated” just yet (two weeks post-second dose, per the CDC), it’s a significant step forward!
In a playful social media post, Dahlia captioned a photo with healthcare professionals at Vanderbilt University after her vaccination, saying, “Dahlia gets a (second) dose of her own medicine.” Last year, she generously donated $1 million to support COVID-19 research at Vanderbilt, which played a crucial role in developing the very vaccine she’s now completed.
The Dolly Parker COVID-19 Research Fund has also extended its reach to include studies on COVID-19 treatments, such as convalescent plasma research at Vanderbilt. Her contributions have earned her recognition in various research papers, highlighting her invaluable support in the fight against the virus. It was only through diligent reporting that her involvement in the vaccine development was unveiled.
Despite being a major benefactor of the Moderna vaccine, Dahlia didn’t jump the queue when the vaccine rollout began in December. Instead, she patiently waited for her turn, securing an appointment and receiving her first dose in early March 2021. In a video message to fans, she expressed her excitement, saying, “I don’t want it to look like I’m jumping the line just because I donated money.”
Dahlia wore a stylish long-sleeve shirt with cut-out shoulders for her vaccination, making it a fashionable choice for the occasion. She even tweaked the lyrics of her famous song “Jolene” to sing about the “vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccciinnneee,” and playfully referred to anti-vaxxers as “chicken squat.” Truly, we must protect this remarkable woman at all costs.
“When I donated the money to the COVID fund, I just wanted it to do good and evidently it is… I just wanted to encourage everybody [to get vaccinated] because the sooner we get to feeling better the sooner we get back to normal… get out there and get your shot,” Dahlia stated during her first dose appointment.
As most states have opened up vaccine eligibility to nearly everyone (with President Biden’s directive for all states by April 19), it’s a great time to take her advice and “get out there and get your shot.”
