Dads Take More Time for Themselves Than Moms – And It’s Not Surprising

A recent survey reveals what many women have long suspected: dads enjoy significantly more “me time” than their female counterparts. As we navigate the ongoing challenges of family life during the pandemic, it appears that moms continue to bear the brunt of household responsibilities while dads take advantage of their free time.

Conducted by Zulily, the survey highlights some concerning statistics. A staggering 88% of moms identify as the primary caregivers in their families, which aligns with the fact that 68% report having only 1-5 hours of personal time each week. In contrast, 37% of dads claim to enjoy 6-10 hours of “me time” weekly, with only 26% of dads citing fewer hours of personal time.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s crucial to acknowledge that 70% of moms feel underappreciated for their efforts during this busy time. While many dads might believe they contribute sufficiently, the reality is often different; 87% of moms handle the household shopping, yet only 46% of dads think they do. This disconnect could be a sign that dads need to step up, especially with the added stress of gift shopping during the holidays, even if it’s primarily online due to COVID.

The pressure for moms to be “super” parents is palpable, with 90% admitting to feeling this societal expectation, compared to just 52% of dads. Interestingly, 56% of fathers consider themselves “super” dads, while only 42% of mothers share that sentiment.

In my own home, I’m grateful that my partner shares the household duties, though I often feel guilty about taking time for myself. While my spouse can easily enjoy a long workout or binge-watch shows, I find myself calculating how much of my free time should be dedicated to parenting or chores. Now that my kids are older, I have more opportunities for self-care, but the “super mom” pressure still looms large.

Let’s encourage one another, moms, to let go of unrealistic expectations this holiday season. Even if we only manage to check off a few items from our never-ending to-do lists, we’ve done well. We deserve some well-earned “me time” in front of the beautifully decorated tree, savoring our favorite drink while watching holiday movies.
