Remember that charming ‘Schitt’s Creek’ toy set that recently captured the internet’s attention? Well, it helped one dad snag a deal with Netflix!
Just last month, a Canadian father named Brian Turner gained widespread recognition after he showcased a delightful replica of Schitt’s Creek using his son’s toys. This creative endeavor, born during the pandemic, quickly caught the eye of fans around the world. Now, Brian is on his way to Netflix, and he’s just as astonished as everyone else.
Hailing from Edmonton, Brian, who typically works as a wedding DJ and karaoke host, found himself with some extra time during the COVID-19 lockdown. Over five months, he meticulously crafted a detailed model of Schitt’s Creek using vintage toys along with those belonging to his two-year-old son, Oliver.
His incredible creation garnered a significant following on social media, attracting attention from the show’s stars, including Annie Murphy and Dan Levy, as well as executives at Netflix. In an interview with Today, Brian shared, “I received a super exciting call when someone from Netflix discovered my artwork. They loved my Instagram and were interested in me producing similar toy art and photography for their original content. That just elevated my excitement to an entirely new level.”
Brian admitted that he had never been compensated for his creative projects before. He found that constructing the replica served as a much-needed outlet for pandemic stress, while also encouraging his young son to pursue his passions. “I was just a father doing silly, fun projects to bring joy to others. To have Netflix reach out to me and see people from all over the globe engaging with my Instagram and sending messages — it truly lifted my spirits,” he reflected.
He continued, “I just followed my passion for creating things that make people laugh and share that with my son.” His newfound viral success reinforced the idea of pursuing what you love. “Even if you don’t land a fantastic opportunity, at least you’ll spend your life doing what you enjoy.”
The irony of this journey is not lost on him, as it began with his admiration for Schitt’s Creek, a series centered on a father gifting his son a town. “Johnny Rose gives Schitt’s Creek to his son, and that ultimately leads to joy, opportunity, and financial gain for their family,” Brian explained. “It’s amusing because I gifted my son the town of Schitt’s Creek, and that led to all this joy and exciting opportunities for us.”
Next up: Netflix! We can’t wait to see what Brian has in store for our favorite shows and films.
