Compelling Reasons to Homeschool

Choosing to homeschool can stem from a variety of motivations. Whether you’re dissatisfied with the local educational system or simply find that homeschooling aligns better with your family’s lifestyle—especially if you love to explore the globe—there are countless benefits. As a devoted homeschooler, I often feel mischaracterized as narrow-minded or overly traditional, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are some of the key reasons why we embrace homeschooling:

  • No More Alarms: The sound of an alarm clock is a significant annoyance for me. I cherish the peaceful mornings while watching the hustle outside my window—moms in minivans and kids in tears. Imagine having the luxury of waking up without an alarm unless you have a flight to catch!
  • Travel Freedom: We can hit the road whenever we like. Those fabulous off-peak rates? Yes, please! Who really enjoys long lines at amusement parks? Field trips are flexible—no rigid schedules or early starts. If a trip turns out to be a bust, we can just head out for lunch, where I might even enjoy a glass of wine.
  • Pajama Days: My children can complete their lessons in their pajamas. Back-to-school shopping? It’s all about comfortable sleepwear! They often lounge with our class pet in their laps while they study, turning education into a cozy experience.
  • Authentic Work: The assignments my kids submit are genuinely theirs. There’s no point in doing their work for them and then grading it. I remember the elaborate projects that came home from school—those were often created by parents, not kids! Plus, we don’t have homework unless someone has really annoyed me, and I certainly don’t pack lunches—lucky me!
  • Global Awareness: We dive into discussions about various cultures, religions, and of course, food. Sometimes, our studies even lead us to the countries we explore—talk about an unforgettable field trip!
  • Political Engagement: During the last election cycle, we attended a political debate, allowing our oldest, Mia, to hear diverse perspectives. It’s essential for her to form her own opinions, even if she didn’t favor either candidate.
  • Immersive Learning: I believe in full immersion—learning about Mexico on Cinco de Mayo should involve a visit to a Mexican restaurant, margarita in hand. Practical life skills like vacuuming or cleaning a bathroom? Those count as PE credits!
  • Embracing Uniqueness: We never pressure our kids to conform. As my oldest, Mia, noted in her blog, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” They are encouraged to be their remarkable selves, and trust me, they truly are exceptional (and that’s not just the margarita talking).

Our world is a classroom, and we wholeheartedly embrace it! Some days, happy hour may come a bit earlier, but my mom friends understand and don’t judge.
