In the wake of the devastating mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults tragically lost their lives, the community is grappling with profound sorrow. To provide support during this challenging time, the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dogs Ministry deployed service dogs to aid in healing and emotional recovery.
The LCC K-9 organization shared heartwarming images on social media, showcasing Golden Retrievers offering solace to survivors, families, first responders, and local residents affected by the tragedy. “Even amid the deep sorrow in Uvalde, TX, hope and love can still be found,” the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs stated on Facebook. “Your prayers give us the strength to stay with this grieving community.”
These specially trained service dogs, known for their ability to connect with individuals of all ages and backgrounds, undergo extensive training from eight weeks old until they reach 18 to 24 months, totaling over 2,000 hours to prepare them for such critical roles. LCC President and CEO Tim Hetzner emphasized the importance of these dogs in providing comfort during times of tragedy.
As the first group of dogs, including Triton, Miriam, Joy, Gabriel, Elijah, Devorah, Cubby, and Abner, prepared to return home, a second group, featuring Keren, Job, Pax, Persis, and Phoebe, was set to arrive in Uvalde. “These dogs offer unconditional love, allowing both children and adults to feel the warmth of friendship and the soothing presence of a Comfort Dog,” a spokesperson explained.
The dogs also attended the funeral of Irma and Joe Garcia, who were deeply affected by the recent events. Irma was a schoolteacher who lost her life in the shooting, and her husband, Joe, sadly passed away from a heart attack shortly afterward. The couple left behind four children.
LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs have previously been deployed to provide support during other tragedies, including the Las Vegas shooting in 2017 and visits to areas affected by Superstorm Sandy and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The organization serves those in need without charging for their services, but donations for their travel and mission are welcomed and appreciated.
