Are narwhals endangered? Yes, unfortunately, they are. Estimates suggest there are around 80,000 narwhals left, with a significant number residing in Canada. An estimated 75% of the population can be found there, divided into the Baffin Bay and Hudson Bay populations.
So, what is driving their endangerment if they have few natural predators? Climate change is a major factor, as the thinning ice in their habitat has caused their numbers to decline. Narwhals are very sensitive creatures and do not fare well in captivity; initial attempts to keep them in controlled environments resulted in their death within a few months.
