In an exciting development, athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick is set to release a children’s book titled I Color Myself Different, due out in April 2022. This book is part of a new multi-book publishing agreement with Scholastic and aims to explore themes of identity, race, and self-esteem through the lens of Kaepernick’s own experiences.
The inspiration for I Color Myself Different comes from a poignant childhood memory of Kaepernick’s, specifically an exercise in kindergarten where he drew his family. He recalls switching from a yellow crayon, which represented his adoptive white family, to a brown crayon for himself, marking a significant moment in recognizing his differences. Kaepernick’s goal is for this deeply personal story to resonate with children everywhere, encouraging them to embrace their uniqueness and live authentically.
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Scholastic to amplify Black and Brown voices,” Kaepernick shared. “I hope our books inspire readers to approach life with confidence and truth.” Andrea Davis Pinkney, Scholastic’s VP and Executive Editor, will oversee the project, while Eric Wilkerson will illustrate it. Debra Dorfman, VP and Publisher at Scholastic, emphasized the alignment of Kaepernick’s mission with Scholastic’s commitment to delivering impactful messages of identity and belonging to young readers.
Kaepernick founded Kaepernick Publishing in 2019, aiming to uplift a new generation of diverse writers. Both I Color Myself Different and another title, Abolition For The People: The Movement For A Future Without Policing & Prisons, are available for pre-order.
