In recent months, various prominent brands such as Target and Costco have introduced sensory-friendly events tailored for individuals on the autism spectrum. However, these initiatives have often been restricted to just one or two venues, limiting access for many families. In response, Chuck E. Cheese’s, in collaboration with the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), is broadening their “Sensory Sensitive Sundays” program to an additional 54 locations.

Previously, Chuck E. Cheese’s organized sensory-friendly Sundays in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Glen Burnie, Maryland. With this expansion, all locations in New York, New Jersey, and New England will now offer these specialized events, bringing the total to 54 venues.

The inaugural event in this series took place on January 8, from 9 to 11 a.m., prior to the venue opening to the general public. Following this initial gathering, sensory-sensitive Sundays will occur on the first Sunday of every month, including February 5, March 5, April 2, and May 7 across all participating locations.

During these sensory-sensitive events, Chuck E. Cheese’s will implement several modifications to create a more accommodating environment. These adjustments include dimming the lights, turning off music and shows, ensuring costumed characters—including the Chuck E. Cheese mouse mascot—remain off the floor, allowing outside food for children with specific dietary needs, and providing specialized training for staff members. A representative from CARD emphasized that these new initiatives are currently in a testing phase, and if successful, they may lead to a nationwide rollout in the coming year.
