Let’s face it: kids can be downright disgusting. They leave boogers on walls, stick chewed bubblegum to random surfaces for a second round, avoid brushing their teeth, and are known to handle frogs before diving into a peanut butter sandwich without so much as a rinse. When we catch them in these revolting acts, we quickly put on our parent hats and guide them towards better hygiene choices. Eventually, our homes become less of a biology experiment, their underwear sees fewer skid marks, and they actually start using soap without constant reminders.
However, it seems that some of the gross behaviors of childhood unfortunately transition into adulthood. Is this a personal failing? A glaring oversight by their parents? Why do certain grown individuals continue to exhibit such appalling behavior as if they’ve never been taught any better?
The Gym Experience
As a group fitness instructor, I’ve worked at multiple gyms, and one thing remains constant across all of them—not the equipment, not the endless supply of workout gear, but rather the sign above the drinking fountain: “PLEASE DO NOT SPIT IN THE DRINKING FOUNTAIN.” It’s astonishing that such a sign is necessary in the first place. But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t stop there. The loogies in the fountain are merely the beginning of a much larger problem.
At one particular gym where I taught, there was a tanning bed room equipped with a small plastic trash can for used tissues and empty lotion bottles. Sadly, management had to remove the trash can altogether because people were using it as a urinal. Yes, you read that correctly—peeing in a trash can. And the bathroom, complete with actual toilets, was just a few feet away!
Gym staff, like those in public restrooms everywhere, face unimaginable filth on a daily basis. From unflushed toilets to unsightly messes involving various bodily fluids, the level of disregard for cleanliness is mind-boggling. It’s enough to make anyone want to retch into a proper receptacle.

Conclusion
In summary, while kids may be messy, there’s no excuse for adults to lack proper manners. Our society should hold everyone accountable for being clean and courteous, regardless of age. It’s high time we all step up our game and remember the importance of basic hygiene and respect in public spaces.
