Curious about what your vagina goes through during childbirth? Let’s dive right in! In a candid chat, Ava the Vagina speaks with Dr. Emily Carter, an experienced OB-GYN, to uncover the truth about vaginal changes after delivery.
Your vagina is remarkably elastic, much like a pair of human Spanx. It stretches to accommodate your baby’s head and can typically return to its original size afterward. However, just like Spanx can lose their shape, the stretching can leave its mark.
In some cases, women may require an episiotomy—a surgical incision designed to enlarge the vaginal opening. If that doesn’t happen, tearing can occur, and while it’s rare, some women might experience a tear that runs from front to back. Ouch!
To minimize the risk of tearing or the need for an episiotomy, your doctor may perform a perineal massage, gently working to stretch the vaginal area. Unfortunately, this technique doesn’t always guarantee success.
What About Your Labia?
Generally, they should maintain their appearance post-delivery, but they too can sustain tears during the process.
