Charlotte: The Name That Went Mainstream

For months, we deliberated over the ideal name for our little girl. While we adored the name Olivia, we opted against it due to its spot in the top three most popular names; we were aiming for something a bit more “original.” We tossed around options like Avery and Caroline, but ultimately, we chose Charlotte because we hadn’t encountered anyone else with that name.

Turns out, I might be living under a rock, as my social circle clearly needs expanding. A few weeks ago, I attended a Baptism class and discovered there was another Charlotte in the room behind me. When it came time for our daughter’s baptism, guess what? Another baby Charlotte was sitting right next to us. And just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, the Royals had to go and name their daughter Charlotte. Seriously, why?

I’d be perfectly fine with anyone else naming their daughter Charlotte; I’d even compliment their taste. But the Princess of the United Kingdom? This is a whole new level. I can’t help but wonder if it’s too late to change my child’s name. After all, she’s destined to be one of many “Charlottes” in her future classroom.

Now, changing her name doesn’t seem like it would be too complicated, but explaining it to our friends and family would be a monumental hassle, especially since she’s six months old. They’d likely think I’ve lost my marbles. Plus, we have a whole bunch of items monogrammed with her name. Maybe I could send the monogrammed gifts to Kate and William and hope for a handwritten note in return, akin to what they did for those fans outside the hospital. That would be a fun twist.

Of course, I don’t know the Royals personally (though I like to imagine that Kate and I would be best friends), so it’s not as if they are copying us. Yet, I know that for at least the next several years, Charlotte will be a top choice for parents everywhere. And that doesn’t feel great.

To my sweet Charlotte, I sincerely apologize for our naming blunder. I have a feeling this will not be the only challenge I’ll face in your upbringing, so I hope you’re ready for the ride. For now, the best I can do is come up with a good nickname that feels unique to you.
