Celebrating Lucas’s Seventh Birthday

Yesterday marked the seventh birthday of my son, Lucas. Coincidentally, he had a day off from school for optional parent-teacher conferences—which I respectfully declined—allowing us to enjoy a full day together. With it being his special day, I was determined to embody the role of the ideal mom—completely present and engaged.

A Special Breakfast

Our day kicked off not with the usual cereal or pre-packaged breakfast bars, but with homemade chocolate chip pancakes. “You can make pancakes?” Lucas exclaimed in surprise. Yes, my dear, I can and I did!

Assembly Adventures

I spent around four hours assembling an array of toys that, in hindsight, I should have avoided purchasing due to their complex assembly requirements. Regardless, I managed to piece everything together—only muttering five obscenities and left with three extra parts that I’m still puzzled over.

Party Time!

In the afternoon, we celebrated with a party at a pinball museum, surrounded by his friends, where I took part in flag football and played the role of a cheerful hostess. Remarkably, I didn’t raise my voice once. I embraced the patience of a saint. If Lucas wanted to take twenty minutes to put on his shoes? That was perfectly fine.

Being Present

Whenever he sought my attention, I was there at 100%. No work distractions, no scrolling through my phone, and no “just a minute” responses. I devoted the entire day to being an engaged and attentive mom.

A Heartwarming End

As I tucked him into bed, I asked if he had a good birthday. “The best!” he replied, and my heart swelled with joy.

Reflections on Motherhood

At this point, I should reflect on how the day reinforced the importance of unplugging and giving my full focus to my children. They deserve warm breakfasts and a mom who remains calm and fully present. This experience brought me happiness, and the evening spent catching up on chores for the day was worth it. Ultimately, it was fulfilling.

Yet, I can’t help but think, thank goodness birthdays only come once a year. Being the “perfect mom” can be utterly exhausting.
