In light of rising COVID-19 Delta variant cases, Broadway has announced new health and safety measures for audiences attending performances. As of last Friday, all attendees will be required to wear masks and present proof of vaccination to enter any of the 41 Broadway theaters in New York City. This mandate extends to performers, crew members, and theater staff as well.

As stated in the Broadway League’s press release, guests must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine authorized by the FDA or WHO. This means that individuals must have received their final dose at least 14 days before attending a show.

Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, expressed her satisfaction with the decision to implement these safeguards, highlighting the importance of a uniform policy across all venues. “This should give even more confidence to our guests about how seriously Broadway is taking audience safety,” she noted. The new guidelines will be in effect through October, with plans for a review in September to assess the policies for performances scheduled in November 2021 and beyond.

Bonnie Comley, president of The Drama League, shared that while the situation remains fluid, this collective decision among various unions marks a positive step forward for the Broadway community.

However, there are exceptions to the vaccination requirement. Children under 12 and individuals with medical conditions or sincere religious beliefs preventing vaccination may attend but must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours or a negative antigen test taken within six hours of the performance.

Nick Scandalios from The Nederlander Organization emphasized that these measures prioritize safety as Broadway prepares for its much-anticipated return. “We’re all eager to welcome our many patrons and fans back to the magic of Broadway,” he remarked.
