If you’re in need of a delightful escape from the chaos of 2020, look no further than “Bridgerton.” This series, produced by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix, invites viewers into a world filled with lavish costumes, a captivating cast, and the iconic voice of Julie Andrews as a society gossip who knows all the juicy details of Regency-era England.

“Bridgerton” is adapted from Julia Quinn’s beloved historical romance novels. The first season focuses on the inaugural book, “The Duke and I.” Spanning from 1813 to 1827, this series of eight novels chronicles the exciting adventures of the close-knit Bridgerton family as they navigate opulent balls, afternoon teas, and the scandalous escapades of London’s elite. Each of the eight Bridgerton siblings—named alphabetically, no less—has their own story to tell.

So, put down your teacup and prepare to be dazzled by the trailer.

In this Shondaland adaptation, we follow the eldest daughter, Daphne Bridgerton (played by Sophia Wilkins), as she enters the competitive marriage market of Regency London. Daphne is charming and determined to find true love, despite the societal pressures of her time and the protective nature of her three older brothers (Anthony, Benedict, and Colin). The mysterious Lady Whistledown, voiced by the legendary Julie Andrews, adds an intriguing layer to the story, stirring up gossip among the high society of London.

Lady Whistledown knows all the secrets of the rich and famous. When the brooding Duke of Hastings (played by Reginald Jean, who is absolutely captivating) crosses paths with Daphne, he begins to question his lifelong bachelorhood as their chemistry ignites. However, their journey is fraught with challenges and unexpected twists.

In addition to the undeniable tension between the leads, “Bridgerton” boasts an impressive ensemble of supporting characters, including the flamboyant Featherington family, who bring an extra layer of fun to the story. Notably, the series stands out for its diverse casting, featuring actors of various ethnic backgrounds as lords and ladies, which is a refreshing change for period dramas often criticized for their lack of representation.

“I’m embarrassed to admit that the term ‘inclusive’ only gained traction in our industry a few years ago,” said the casting director Kelly Valentine Hendry in an interview with Vogue UK. “It was long dominated by white men shaping narratives through their own experiences. Only recently have I felt empowered to challenge those norms.”

As a devoted fan of the Bridgerton novels, I was ecstatic when I learned that Shonda Rhimes was bringing my cherished books to life as a visually stunning and engaging Netflix series. I may have even squealed with delight (not to mention the fact that I have two signed copies from the author and my own unpublished romance manuscript gathering dust on my laptop).

Romance novels, especially historical ones, often don’t receive the recognition they deserve. They typically feature strong female protagonists who find love, enjoy fulfilling relationships, and triumph over relatable obstacles to achieve their well-deserved happy endings.

Take Nicholas Sparks, for instance; his works are better described as tragedy rather than romance. While audiences tend to flock to tales of woe and suffering—a phenomenon I call the Suffering Olympics—genuine romance narratives often face dismissal due to ingrained misogyny.

Reading for joy should never be a source of embarrassment. Having Julia Quinn’s delightful stories—filled with humor, romance, and moments that tug at the heartstrings—adapted for the world’s largest streaming platform by Shonda Rhimes is a much-needed bright spot in a year filled with uncertainty.

“Bridgerton” premieres on Netflix on December 25.
