Brianna Harper is breaking barriers in the world of NASCAR. At just 27 years old, she made her mark in 2016 as the first Black woman to join a NASCAR pit crew, and now she has achieved another significant milestone by becoming NASCAR’s first Black female tire changer.

“God couldn’t have chosen anyone better for this role,” Brianna stated, reflecting on her groundbreaking position within the NASCAR crew. “It takes a strong individual to embrace this change, especially considering NASCAR’s history and the familiar faces that dominate the racetrack. Initially, I felt a bit apprehensive about how I’d be perceived, but I realized that someone needed to step up, and I was ready to take on that challenge.”

As part of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity initiative, which aims to recruit and train minority and female drivers and pit crew members, Brianna was the sole woman auditioning for a place on the pit crew team. It was during her tryout that she discovered her passion for tire changing. Shortly thereafter, she received an invitation to join NASCAR’s pit crew program.

In 2019, Brianna made history as the first Black woman to participate in the Daytona 500 race. The following year, she earned the coveted crew member award at the 2020 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Awards Ceremony. This year, she has once again made waves as the first Black female tire changer on the No. 51 Chevrolet for Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Earlier this month, Brianna teamed up with fellow pit crew members Lisa O’Connell and Tara Johnson as one of the few women participating in the Daytona 500.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to have other women reach out and say, ‘You’re living my dream; how can I get involved?’” Brianna shared with People. “As more people witness my journey, it inspires them to pursue their own dreams, and I hope to see many more women in this sport in the future.”

As a tire changer, Brianna is responsible for quickly removing lug nuts from tires and replacing them, along with carrying and cleaning tires on race day. And she’s impressively fast at it.

“People said, ‘She won’t last long; she’ll probably be gone in a few months,’” she recalled, referring to her skeptics. “While not everyone is thrilled about my achievements, that just fuels my motivation to continue excelling in my role.”
