Being a Fantastic Mom While Maintaining a Tidy Home

Absolutely, you can be a fantastic mom while maintaining a tidy home!

Right now, my daughter is upstairs vacuuming, and I can confidently say that my house is organized, the laundry is folded, and everything feels just right. I like to think of myself as a pretty great mom, and yes, my home is generally clean.

With three teenage kids, I’ve learned that they need activities to keep them away from their screens and to remind them that life isn’t just about social media, sports, and binge-watching YouTube. A little cleaning each day teaches them that chores exist—they won’t grow up thinking that magical fairies are responsible for scrubbing toilets, cleaning showers, or folding laundry.

Even before my kids were old enough to pitch in, I managed to keep a clean house and still felt pretty awesome. Now, with their help, my ability to have fun has increased. Because honestly, there’s nothing enjoyable about cleaning up a mess while my kids are blissfully unaware of the chaos around them.

To be a fun mom, I need a bit of order. It helps me keep my spirits high and allows me to dish out jokes, treats, and the occasional dance party on the sofa. When everything is in its place, I can easily find what I need without rummaging through clutter, and my floors aren’t sticky—what a relief!

Life with kids can be chaotic, and a messy home amplifies that chaos. Here’s the truth: you can be a fabulous mom and have a messy home, or you can be a wonderful mom and enjoy a clean house. Your parenting prowess isn’t determined by the dust bunnies on your floor or the state of your pantry.

Some thrive in a cluttered environment, while others require a bit of organization to feel at ease. Personally, I’m someone who needs a bit of order to stay comfortable. When I’m mopping the floors, I can do it in my pajamas while belting out my favorite tunes, and that’s a blast!

After a satisfying cleaning session, I feel on top of the world, seeing a spotless home where dust is absent, cushions are in their rightful places, and no trash is lingering by the bin. My family knows me well enough that if they want something—be it a new toy or a snack—they better clean up after themselves, or our negotiations will look something like this:

Kids: “Hey Mom, can I have…?”
Me: “Hold up! Don’t even think about asking for anything until you’ve tidied up your toys. I need a clear head to decide what’s fair.”

Sure, I’ve left my kids under the supervision of someone else who didn’t mind the mess, but they understood then and understand now: they can either come home to a cheerful mom who lets them enjoy screen time and treats when the house is mostly picked up, or they can face a less-than-pleased mom when they decide to unleash chaos, like dumping out every toy or turning the living room into a fort.

Wanting cleanliness doesn’t make you any less of a fun parent than someone who doesn’t prioritize it. I also don’t barge in on my kids during playtime to enforce cleanliness—imagination and laughter are part of the experience. My home is typically tidy, and I create just as many memories as anyone else. I still let my kids be a little mischievous sometimes, and I certainly don’t play the martyr; I have too much going on, from cleaning to teaching them how to load the dishwasher properly without losing my hair!

In Summary

It’s entirely possible to balance being a great mom and maintaining a clean home. Whether you lean towards order or a little chaos, your parenting style is valid.
