Barbie has officially introduced a doll inspired by plus-size model Ashley Graham, complete with realistic proportions that celebrate body diversity. This year has been monumental for Graham, who made history as the first plus-size model to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated, launched her own lingerie line at New York Fashion Week, and confidently embraced her curves, including her cellulite. We couldn’t be more thrilled with her achievements.
The unveiling of the Ashley Graham doll took place at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards, where Graham received it with pride.
In attendance at the event, she remarked, “I never really thought I didn’t look like her growing up; I just thought she was perfect.” Graham emphasized the importance of representation, stating that if she had a doll that resembled her size, it would have normalized her body image. “Young girls today will grow up knowing that their bodies are valid, which is incredibly empowering,” she explained.
This one-of-a-kind Barbie features a fierce cat-eye makeup look, statement hoop earrings, and, most importantly, thighs that touch—something that has never been part of a traditional Barbie doll. “The number one requirement was that her thighs touched. I told them, ‘If her thighs don’t touch, she’s not authentic.’”
As a child, Barbie served as a canvas for my imagination; my doll was an entrepreneur and a powerhouse, despite her unrealistic proportions. Imagine how impactful it would have been to have a doll that reflected a curvier body type. Many girls have longed for a doll that looks like them, and thanks to Mattel’s recent efforts to introduce various body shapes and skin tones, that dream is finally becoming a reality.
Tanya Missad, Mattel’s Director of Consumer Insights, stated, “We must empower girls to understand that it doesn’t matter what shape they come in; anything is possible.” If that’s truly the case, we would love to see this Ashley Graham doll made available for purchase soon.
