I have a friend who won’t stop messaging me to purchase items from her new MLM venture. I don’t need more bags, I dislike scented candles, and honestly, I barely find time to wash my face at night, let alone try some convoluted five-step skincare regimen that promises to make me look a decade younger. How can I turn her down without offending her or jeopardizing our friendship?
Ah, the classic MLM pitch. I’ve realized that life is too short, and I don’t have the energy to deal with MLM nonsense. I don’t want to waste my precious downtime scrolling through Facebook just to fend off sketchy sales pitches invading my DMs. You shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting to escape it, either.
Handling this situation depends on the type of friend you’re dealing with. If they’re just someone from high school you haven’t spoken to in years, or a mom who pretends to be friendly but speaks ill of you at PTA meetings, then perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to unfriend, unfollow, and remove that toxic influence from your life.
However, if this is a friend you value—since you indicated you don’t want to “ruin the friendship”—there are a couple of ways to address it.
You could be blunt and say something like this: No, I will not join your so-called ‘party’ that’s really just a pyramid scheme designed to keep women trapped in a cycle of consumerism and insecurity. I refuse to believe that I need a trendy bag or some overpriced anti-wrinkle cream to feel powerful or worthy. I am enough as I am!
Or, you could simply say, No thanks, and leave it at that.
Either response can be effective, depending on your comfort level.
