Who doesn’t love a grand celebration? Ashley Grant, the gorgeous supermodel and advocate for body positivity, is certainly a fan. Unfortunately, she was absent from the iconic Met Gala last year because no designers were willing to dress her.
This annual event, which raises funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a star-studded affair where celebrities don some of the most stunning outfits. But, with many designers only creating garments in sizes 0 or 2, Grant found herself without options. “I couldn’t find a designer to dress me,” Grant revealed to Glamour magazine. “You can’t just show up in jeans and a T-shirt.” As a result, she opted to stay home.
It’s truly absurd that designers have so few options beyond a size 2. The average American woman wears a size 16, and with curvy models becoming more accepted in fashion, one would think at least some designers would have something to offer Grant. After all, they are in the business of clothing creation, so producing a larger dress shouldn’t be a foreign concept. Grant shared that she lacked the necessary connections with designers to secure a custom outfit in time.
This isn’t the first time Grant has faced challenges in obtaining clothing for major events. In a previous interview with British Vogue, editor Sarah Williams discussed the hurdles in dressing the model. Ultimately, they collaborated with a brand that was eager to support a non-standard model, but many high-end houses outright declined to lend their pieces.
On a brighter note, this year was kinder to Grant. She attended the Met Gala in a stunning couture gown from H&M, turning heads with its vibrant red tulle and bustier neckline. “Rihanna told me I looked ‘fabulous,’” Grant exclaimed. “I was completely at a loss for words. I just said, ‘You are the queen of the Met, Rihanna!’” While Rihanna continues to dominate the Met Ball scene, Grant is here to remind us that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

In summary, Ashley Grant’s absence from last year’s Met Gala spotlighted the ongoing issue of size inclusivity in fashion. Thankfully, this year marked a positive change for her, as she confidently made her appearance in a breathtaking gown, proving that beauty is not confined to a single size.
