Trigger Warning: Child Loss

Today, my family had lunch at a cemetery. It might sound strange, but the experience felt necessary as I yearn for a sense of togetherness that has been marred by grief.

My daughter, Ava, who passed away at four months old, has been resting in this serene place for a year and a half. As her second birthday approaches, the weight of her absence grows heavier. I felt an urge to be close to her today.

I gathered the toddlers, packed a few blankets, and made a quick stop at our local Hardee’s—because cooking would only result in cold food, or maybe that’s just my excuse. Normally, my kids remain quiet during the drive, but this time was different. As soon as we arrived, my son exclaimed, “Look, Mommy! There’s Ava!” My heart melted. “Yes, sweetheart, that’s Ava.”

Our visit may not have looked conventional. We shared laughter and joy among the headstones, practicing cartwheels and reminiscing about our little girl. The smiles on my children’s faces reminded me that even in sorrow, there could be moments of happiness.

While it may seem odd to have lunch surrounded by gravestones, the truly unnatural aspect is the fact that I had to lay my child to rest. To us, this place was where we felt connected to Ava. The sun finally peeked through the clouds, and the wind chimes created a soothing melody, bringing a sense of peace to our family.

Today, we embraced a little joy amidst our pain. I cherish these moments, no matter how “unnatural” they may appear, because our family has faced enough difficult days to appreciate the good ones.
