Like many, I’ve always felt a sense of dread when Monday rolls around. This feeling began in high school and has lingered into my adult life. While I find great satisfaction in my job, transitioning from a relaxing weekend back to the hustle of the week can be challenging.
One Sunday evening a few years ago, as I lounged on the sofa after putting the kids to bed, I pondered how to navigate the upcoming hectic week. It dawned on me that we needed a break from our busy schedules, and if I didn’t take the initiative, we wouldn’t find one.
I decided that Monday would be the ideal day to drop the kids off at school and then treat ourselves afterward. It wasn’t a grand plan, but it made a significant impact on our family dynamic.
When the kids woke up the next day, initially dreading school, their spirits lifted when I announced our post-school treat of donuts and hot chocolate. The following Monday, they eagerly asked if we could repeat the tradition, and thus, it began!
This simple act has become a cherished weekly ritual that strengthens our bond. Although brief, it provides just the right amount of quality time that my teenagers can manage on a Monday afternoon. I look forward to it, too; not only do I get to indulge in a large Diet Coke, but I also cherish those extra moments with my kids before they retreat to their rooms for homework. We often try different places based on our cravings, and it’s flexible enough to shift to another day if needed.
This little tradition means the world to me. Life is truly about savoring those small moments that occur between the daily grind. Dedicating this time to my teens every Monday afternoon will forever remain one of my favorite rituals.
