Our Reciprocal IVF Journey: A Personal Story
My partner and I always knew we wanted to start a family, but as a same-sex couple, we knew our journey to parenthood might look a little different than others. After much research and consideration, we decided to embark on a reciprocal IVF journey, a process in which one partner provides the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy.
Our journey began with finding the right fertility clinic, one that was LGBTQ+ friendly and had experience with reciprocal IVF. After multiple consultations and visits to different clinics, we finally found the perfect one for us. The staff made us feel welcomed and understood our unique situation, which instantly put us at ease.
The next step was to choose which one of us would provide the eggs and who would carry the pregnancy. After much discussion, we decided that I would be the one to provide the eggs, as I had always wanted to experience pregnancy and childbirth. My partner was more than happy to support me and carry our child.
The process of egg retrieval was not an easy one, both physically and emotionally. The hormonal injections, daily monitoring, and frequent doctor appointments took a toll on my body. However, seeing my partner’s unwavering support and the thought of having a child together kept me going. After two weeks of injections, the eggs were finally ready to be retrieved. The procedure itself was quick and painless, and we were able to retrieve a good number of eggs.
Meanwhile, my partner had started taking hormones to prepare her body for the embryo transfer. We had chosen to use my eggs and donor sperm, so the embryos would be genetically related to both of us. This was an important factor for us, as we wanted our child to have a connection to both of us.

A Personal Story: Our Reciprocal IVF Journey
The embryo transfer was the most nerve-wracking part of the entire process. We had two embryos implanted, and the wait for the pregnancy test felt like an eternity. After two weeks, we finally got the news we had been waiting for – we were pregnant! We were overjoyed and couldn’t believe that our dream of starting a family was finally coming true.
The next nine months consisted of regular doctor appointments, ultrasounds, and preparing for the arrival of our little one. My partner was a trooper throughout the entire pregnancy, dealing with morning sickness and other pregnancy symptoms like a champ. We also faced some challenges as a same-sex couple, such as dealing with insensitive comments and questions from strangers. But we stayed strong and focused on the amazing journey we were on.
Finally, the big day arrived, and our beautiful baby was born. The feeling of holding our child for the first time is indescribable. We both felt an instant connection to our little one, knowing that we had both played a part in bringing them into the world. Our journey to parenthood was not an easy one, but it was all worth it in the end.
As our child grows, we continue to be grateful for the reciprocal IVF process that allowed both of us to be involved in the creation of our family. We hope that by sharing our story, we can help others who may be considering reciprocal IVF or facing similar challenges in their journey to parenthood. Love knows no boundaries, and with advances in technology, starting a family is possible for all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation or fertility struggles.
In summary, our reciprocal IVF journey was a rollercoaster of emotions, but it brought us the greatest joy and fulfillment of becoming parents. It taught us the power of love, perseverance, and the importance of finding a supportive and understanding community. We are forever grateful for our experience and the beautiful child we have to show for it.
