Guide me, O Heavenly Father, as I navigate the complexities of potty training in this social media era. Help me to resist the urge to broadcast online every intimate detail of our journey—let neither my blog, Facebook, nor Twitter echo my delight at seeing success in the potty, nor my exasperation at the inevitable accidents that come with this rite of passage.
Grant me the gift of discretion, dear Lord, so that friends and family are spared from the endless details of our potty experiences—soiled garments, potty routines, unfortunate mishaps, and the tally of stickers or treats awarded for each successful trip. Instead, may these conversations be reserved for cherished calls with grandparents, who are the rightful audience for such tales.
Provide me with insight, O God, that I may recognize the only individuals interested in my child’s undergarments are those with sinister intentions. Should these ill-hearted individuals, somehow escape justice, may a fierce honey badger appear to protect my child from their malevolence—because honey badgers, as we know, don’t care.
Let me be reminded before I share a photo of my child on the toilet, however cute her expression may be, to pause and ask myself, “Would I want this shared about me?” (And may the answer always be a firm no, as we all know some people have questionable tastes.)
Almighty Creator, instill in me the understanding that bathroom moments are sacred and should remain private. The subject of bodily functions, even when viewed through the innocent lens of a toddler, is not appropriate for public consumption.
Lastly, help me to view my child with clarity, acknowledging her growth into a little person with her own thoughts and feelings, deserving of fundamental privacy.
Hear my earnest request, O Lord, and guide me away from foolishness. In Your name, I pray, now and always.
Amen.
