There’s nothing quite like a girls’ night out. From the innocence of popcorn and secrets during childhood slumber parties to the vibrant energy of grandmas with fabulous poodle perms at the bingo hall, gathering with friends has always been a cherished tradition. However, as a mother of two little ones under the age of two, I’ve realized that my approach to these rare outings has transformed significantly.

Pre-Children Preparation for Girls’ Night Out:

  1. Set the mood with upbeat tunes.
  2. Pour myself a generous glass of wine.
  3. Browse my wardrobe, contemplating what to wear, and try on a few outfits.
  4. Indulge in a relaxed shower, taking the time to exfoliate, shave, and wash my hair thoroughly.
  5. Moisturize my freshly-shaved legs and apply makeup, followed by blow-drying and styling my hair.
  6. Refill my wine glass and turn up the music.
  7. Check in with my girlfriends to see their plans and outfits.
  8. Reassess my closet to select the ideal ensemble, complete with shoes and accessories.
  9. Pamper myself with a quick manicure and pedicure, if I haven’t had the chance to visit a salon.
  10. Enjoy my wine while grooving to the music and waiting for my nail polish to dry.
  11. Call a taxi and catch up on emails as I wait.
  12. Grab my keys and head out the door.

Sounds delightful, doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t want to stay in after such a luxurious pre-outing ritual?

Post-Children Preparation for Girls’ Night Out:

  1. Search for the remote to snag a brief moment of peace while I get ready.
  2. Get the kids a quick snack to keep them occupied.
  3. Frantically rummage for something that fits and doesn’t have a maternity panel.
  4. Ditch the shower; a spritz of deodorant and some dry shampoo will have to do.
  5. Apply mascara and conceal any blemishes, even at my age.
  6. Start dinner while anxiously checking when my partner will return from work.
  7. Call my spouse to insist he comes home immediately.
  8. Feed the kids and hand off parenting duties to my partner as he walks through the door.
  9. Quickly paint my nails, hoping no one notices the mess all over my fingers and toes.
  10. Realize I’m not quite off duty yet, as I still need to handle the kids’ pajamas, teeth brushing, and nighttime bottles.
  11. Share hugs goodbye, resulting in a bit of snot on my skirt and smudged polish.
  12. Make a dash for the door while blowing kisses to the tiny faces pressed against the window.
