Wilkins shared that her 13-year-old son is thriving socially because of the support he receives. “If this bill becomes law, it would be a form of child abuse,” she declared. “And I will remind you each time a transgender child dies by suicide, that their lives could have been saved if you had chosen compassion instead of this legislation.”
While Texas Republicans advocate for banning gender-affirming healthcare for minors, attendance at the committee meeting was sparse, leaving many voices unheard. “I was scared initially, thinking he might want surgery,” Wilkins explained. “But it’s important to note that gender-affirming surgeries are not performed on minors, and there are safe, reversible options like hormone blockers that can significantly improve the lives of transgender youth.”
