Dear Kids,
If I were to meet my untimely end—perhaps from heatstroke at the hot yoga class my so-called “friends” are dragging me into—there are a few vital pieces of wisdom I want you to carry with you through life.
Love, Mom
-
Avoid Being a Jerk.
The most crucial advice I can impart is this: don’t be a jerk. A jerk is someone who believes they are superior and disregards the feelings of others. Look around—jerks are everywhere. From historical figures like dictators to that one classmate who left you out of the birthday party invite, they exist in every corner of life.
-
Remember, You Don’t Know Everything.
Many people who seem like jerks may have become that way due to tough upbringing or unfortunate life experiences. Before you judge someone’s actions, consider that you might not know the whole story. Give them another chance; if they continue being a jerk, then it’s time to walk away.
-
Stand Up for Yourself.
If a bully lays a hand on you, don’t hesitate to stand your ground. Sure, your teacher might say to “use your words,” but sometimes, actions speak louder. Try something like this: “Hey, stop it! If you hit me again, I will hit you back.” If they go for it again, defend yourself. You warned them; now it’s time to act.
-
Refrain From Absolutes.
Never say, “I would NEVER…” You never know how you might react in a challenging situation. Life can throw curveballs that change who we are, so avoid quick judgments of others.
-
Stay Away from Drugs.
Seriously, have you ever seen anyone’s life improve because of drugs? Just look at the tragedies of famous figures like Elvis or Whitney Houston. It’s not worth it.
Now onto the “Do’s”:
-
Check Yourself Before You Leave.
Always ensure your teeth are clean, your shoes are free of toilet paper, and your zipper is up. And if you see a friend with something stuck in their teeth, tell them! A true friend doesn’t let another walk around looking silly.
-
Share the Spotlight.
Pass the ball, but not just to the star players. Give that kid who’s struggling a chance to shine. It doesn’t matter if they fumble; everyone deserves to feel included.
-
Be with People Who Accept You.
You’re going to make mistakes, and you might even have moments that aren’t your best. Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are, flaws and all. Holding in your true self is exhausting.
-
Dance When Asked.
It takes courage to ask someone to dance. Don’t decline just because you’re shy. Embrace the moment; it’s just a dance!
-
Listen to the Older Generations.
We’ve been through a lot—heartbreaks, poor choices, and regrets. We have valuable experiences to share. Trust me, we know a thing or two about life.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get ready for that yoga class.
