A Heartfelt Note to My Incredible Nurse (And All Nurses Everywhere)

Dear Nurse,

To all the nurses I’ve encountered—past, present, and those I’ve yet to meet—I want to express my deepest gratitude. I can hardly grasp the complexities of your role or the extensive array of responsibilities that come with it each day. Some tasks you likely embraced with enthusiasm, while others must feel like a heavy burden you wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I can only imagine the physical, emotional, and mental toll your job takes on you daily. The whirlwind of emotions you experience, sometimes within a single shift, must be overwhelming. I believe that feelings of frustration can quickly shift to moments of joy, and that the weight of anger can morph into laughter with just one interaction with a new patient.

While it’s clear you wish for us to understand the challenges of your job and the personal sacrifices it entails, I also want to share something important with you. For a long time, I recognized your efforts and felt grateful for your service, but I didn’t truly see you.

It wasn’t until I faced a difficult moment—one that went beyond what could be recorded on a chart—that I truly understood your profound impact. During a D&C procedure following my miscarriage, I was emotionally vulnerable and numb, yet I was trying to hold myself together. When the nurse came to me, she began by asking the routine questions, but when I had to explain my situation, her expression shifted to one of deep empathy.

In that moment, she offered me her condolences and continued with her questions, but when my husband stepped out for a moment, she asked about the remains of my baby. It was a heart-wrenching question, and I broke down completely. To my surprise, she climbed onto my bed and held me, sharing in my grief, wiping my tears, and even praying with me. Though we were strangers, she became a comforting presence—a mother figure when mine couldn’t be there.

Even five years later, I can clearly picture her in my mind. She embodied kindness and compassion during a time when I desperately needed it. Until that point, my experiences with healthcare had been relatively mild, but she showed me what true nursing is about.

Since then, I’ve gained a new perspective. I see you now, every part of you, and I am endlessly grateful. Thank you for taking my blood pressure but also for the countless other patients you’ve comforted, cried with, celebrated, and mourned beside. Your role transcends medical responsibilities; you are a beacon of support during the most vulnerable moments of life.

To my amazing nurse, I see you, and I’m in awe of the work you do every day.
