It’s not every day that a dog requires rescue during a hike, but when it happens, it’s a story worth sharing. Anyone who has trekked up a mountain knows how challenging it can be, especially if you’re not in peak condition. Meet Rufus, a 190-pound Mastiff who prefers lounging on the couch over outdoor adventures. Unfortunately, during a hike in Salt Lake County, Rufus became exhausted and injured his paws, prompting a volunteer Search and Rescue team to step in and bring him to safety. No shame in that, Rufus—we totally understand!
According to the Search and Rescue team’s social media update, they received a call about a large, injured dog about two miles up the Grandeur Peak Trail. Several hikers had alerted authorities that Rufus and his owner were stranded on the trail. The Salt Lake County Search and Rescue team quickly mobilized to ensure they could assist Rufus and his human before nightfall.
The story has a delightful ending: Rufus was safely secured in a stretcher and carried down the mountain. “Rufus was a very good boy and took the help graciously,” the team shared.
Rufus, three years old, was hiking with his owner and family when their intended three-hour hike turned into a challenge. After accidentally veering off the designated path, the group had to navigate a steep incline, which drained Rufus’s remaining energy and left his paws injured. His owner provided plenty of water and prepared to stay the night, but concerned fellow hikers—who also offered Rufus extra water—called for help as soon as they regained cell service. By evening, the Search and Rescue crew was dispatched.
“This rescue was unique due to Rufus’s size,” noted squad leader Jake Thompson. Despite Rufus weighing in as much as a large adult, the team approached the situation like any other rescue operation. Ten volunteers equipped with helmets, ropes, radios, and a stretcher set out, though they faced challenges when one of the stretcher’s wheels broke an hour in.
“We anticipated needing to strap him down, but Rufus was remarkably well-behaved,” Thompson remarked, adding that the pup seemed appreciative of the assistance. Truly a good boy.
To add to the joy of this tale, the Search and Rescue team shared numerous photos and videos on their social media, allowing everyone to witness Rufus in action. Heartwarming comments flooded in, with many expressing relief that Rufus was safely rescued.
By about 10:30 that night, Rufus, his owner, and the Search and Rescue team all made it safely off the mountain. While Rufus’s adventure concluded positively, it serves as a valuable reminder: if you take your dog hiking, always be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. Or, as we suggest, just plan to call for help so the world can celebrate more canine rescues!
