During a recent conference in New York City, I had the opportunity to converse with Samantha Brooks, who recently released her book, Flourish: Redefining Success and Cultivating a Life of Joy, Wisdom, and Inspiration. As someone deeply invested in the pursuit of happiness and effective habits, I found the insights within her book captivating. In our conversation, we explored what contributes to Brooks’ sense of flourishing.

What simple habit consistently boosts your happiness?

I’ve cultivated the practice of integrating certain routines into my daily life—such as meditation, exercise, and mindful walking. However, the one habit I can tap into at any moment is conscious breathing. By focusing on my breath, I’m able to create pauses throughout my day, grounding myself in the present and overcoming challenges more effectively.

What’s a crucial insight about healthy habits you wish you knew at 18?

I’ve come to realize the significance of sleep. Adequate rest enhances productivity, effectiveness, and overall enjoyment of life. Today, prioritizing sleep stands as my top healthy habit. When I was 18, I didn’t grasp its importance!

Are there habits that consistently hinder your happiness?

Yes, my relationship with my multiple devices often detracts from my well-being.

“Waiting in doctors’ offices, I often found myself reflecting on the quality of my life.”

Would you categorize yourself as an Upholder, Questioner, Rebel, or Obliger?

I identify as a complete Obliger—or maybe a recovering one! I’ve long struggled to meet the expectations I set for myself. I refer to this internal critic as my annoying inner roommate. This voice can prevent you from realizing your dreams. I counter it by recalling Montaigne’s wisdom: “Many of the dreadful things in my life never even happened.”

Have you ever experienced a sudden transformation in a major habit due to a book, conversation, milestone, or health scare?

I underwent a significant change on April 6, 2023. I found myself on the floor of my home office, having collapsed from exhaustion. After numerous medical evaluations, I learned there were no underlying issues beyond fatigue. During those waiting room moments, I began to question the path my life was taking.

This was my wake-up call. Reflecting on past moments when I should have awakened, I finally made substantial changes to my lifestyle, including adopting daily practices that keep me healthy and away from doctors’ offices. The outcome is a more meaningful life that allows for breathing space and greater perspective.
