There’s a prevailing notion that the ease of modern conveniences paralyzes us; that the sheer number of choices can be so overwhelming it stifles our ability to make decisions. While this observation holds truth, I believe it doesn’t fully explain why we might choose to skip our first meditation class in favor of binge-watching an entire season of a show. It’s often simpler to remain in our familiar surroundings, both physically in our homes and emotionally in our lives.

We all recognize that many of our persistent challenges stem from deep-seated beliefs that we may not even be aware of. Opting to stay stagnant when we yearn for progress is essentially yielding to our unconscious selves. The struggle for well-being is amplified by our hidden commitment to remaining in our comfort zones—clinging to identities we’ve long held: the sick one, the weak one, the outsider, the broken.

We tend to recycle outdated narratives and cling to old ways of thinking, comforted by perspectives we formed during childhood. If we fail to scrutinize these views, we default to them. Each time we avoid actions we know are necessary, we are reaffirming those antiquated beliefs.

As a child, my stepfather had an affinity for gadgets and technology. He outfitted our home with an intercom system on every phone, which he would “accidentally” monitor. Our basement turned into a storage space for cables, antennas, and other parts he believed he might need someday. One evening, he proudly presented a Betamax VCR while everyone else was flocking to the VHS version.

“This,” he declared, “Is the future.”

However, it quickly became clear that it was anything but the future, fading into obsolescence almost immediately. The unconscious perceptions we hold about ourselves mirror this Betamax—useful for projecting our stories, yet ultimately outdated. Instead of relying on these ineffective models, we should invest in our future selves, discarding what no longer serves us.
