Parenthood is undeniably strange. To navigate the delightful chaos of my household, I’ve found myself engaging in some truly bizarre antics that would have left my younger self questioning my sanity. Yet, we undertake these peculiar tasks either for the sheer amusement of it or because we’re so utterly exhausted that taking our kids out for dinner—despite their less-than-stellar behavior at home—seems like a brilliant idea. Spoiler alert: it usually isn’t.
Here’s a glimpse into some of the odd things I’ve done while parenting:
- On my own volition, I bought my kids a slingshot, glitter pens, Play-Doh, a plastic sword, a rainbow loom, Legos, and a stash of stickers.
- I once held a toy elephant over the sink and pretended it was urinating after I told my daughter her stuffed animal couldn’t use the toilet.
- I’ve encouraged my children to voice their opinions. (What was I thinking?)
- I’ve belted out incorrect song lyrics and danced like a trained monkey just to motivate my kid to do something they were reluctant about, like… “Let it go! Let it go! Let that poop come o-o-out!”
- I intentionally gave gum to a three-year-old.
- Exhausted, I’ve frantically searched for my phone around the house, only to realize I was already on it.
- I once accidentally tucked in my daughter’s stuffed animal, leading to a cascade of bedtime negotiations.
- I lied to my daughter, telling her that the mushroom she was eating was chicken, and I couldn’t help but laugh when she actually enjoyed it.
- I’ve been so impressed with the size of one of my child’s bowel movements that I called my partner in to marvel at it. More than once.
- In a moment of weakness, I let my kids choose anything they wanted at the bookstore—big mistake, indecision reigned supreme.
- We’ve fostered independence in our children, only for them to believe they can do everything solo, and, of course, they’re doing it all wrong.
- At one point, I found myself administering a suppository to another person.
